31:  Iowa Voices Project

History of the Iowa Voices Project:

2006: Katie, as a survivor herself, wants to give back.  She gets an idea that sets the whole project in motion.

2007--summer and early fall: Katie interviews and photographs 31 survivors of domestic violence all over Iowa and creates a newspaper article from each interview.  Click here to read Katie's introduction to the project.

2007--October: A story and its corresponding photo is published each day  in newspapers all over Iowa to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

2008--October: Katie takes the Voices project photos on the road for the first time, visiting colleges and other venues in communities across Iowa to start conversations about domestic violence.

2009--summer and fall: Katie works on a book version of the interviews and photos.  She also starts to work with others to create art quilts from the stories.  Some of the women interviewed for the book also do presentations about domestic violence as the 31 project Speaker's Bureau.

2009--October: Katie again takes the Voices project on the road, visiting some of the same communities and some new places.  She brings one of the first art quilts to accompany the photographs.
