With sadness ICADV shares the news that Sheila Schertz Stout passed away on Friday, March 2, 2012 after a lengthy battle with a serious illness. Sheila was one of the Skylark Project’s first clients, and Governor Culver granted her commutation in January 2011, eliminating her life sentence and making her eligible for parole. While at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women Sheila was an active participant in Residents Encounter Christ and the Animal Rescue League’s Whiskers cat program, among other activities. Last fall Sheila paroled from the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women, and she achieved several milestones: she reconnected with supportive friends, lived independently, and even adopted a cat. We will remember Sheila’s strength, tenacity, and courage.
