JOB OPENING: BILINGUAL STAFF ATTORNEY

 

MUNA Legal Clinic of Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence has two openings for full-time staff attorneys who are bilingual in both English and Spanish.  MUNA is a nonprofit legal agency providing a holistic approach and comprehensive services to battered immigrant women.  MUNA Legal Clinic represents low-income battered immigrant women and children in immigration and family law cases.  MUNA also provides technical assistance, training, community clinics, and outreach to the immigrant community, service providers, and advocates.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Counsel and represent clients in often complex VAWA, U Visa, T Visa, asylum, special juvenile immigration status and removal cases. 
  • Counsel and represent clients in family law cases including protective orders, dissolution and custody actions. 
  • Must be able to offer technical assistance and training to advocates, service providers and community.
  • Assist staff as needed with outreach efforts.
  • Travel bi-monthly throughout the state of Iowa to meet with clients, assist with clinics, trainings and outreach.
  • Must be able to work in unpredictable environment with little supervision.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Admission (in good standing) to Iowa Bar.
  • Bilingual in spoken and written Spanish.
  • Prior experience handling immigration OR family law matters (2-3 years).
  • Experience working with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault (2-3 years).
  • Commitment to immigrant rights, human rights and social justice, and the ability to work effectively with low-income and diverse populations.
  • Speaking, training and outreach experience.
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Capable of carrying a high case load.

Specialized Immigration Legal Advocate (SILA)

MUNA Legal Clinic of Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence has an opening for full-time Specialized Immigration Legal Advocate (SILA) who is bilingual in both English and Spanish.  The MUNA program of the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence is a nonprofit legal agency providing a holistic approach and comprehensive services to battered immigrant women.  MUNA Legal Clinic represents low-income battered immigrant women and children in immigration and family law cases.  MUNA also provides technical assistance, training, community clinics, and outreach to the immigrant community, service providers, and advocates.

 JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

·        To host and organize “Know Your Rights” presentations followed by legal clinics throughout the state of Iowa.

·        Complete intakes on immigration and family law cases.

·        Assist in gathering documentation and evidence to support immigration cases.

·        Assist clients filing temporary protective orders.

·        Coordinate and help with case preparation for MUNA attorneys providing family law services.

·        Coordinate cases with Iowa Legal Aid attorneys, providing legal assistance on welfare, housing, or landlord tenant issues.

·        Assist immigrant communities with organizing and leadership development activities in order to plan and implement culturally specific services.

·        Work locally to educate and remove systematic barriers imposed by service providers who are not aware of immigrant survivor’s rights.

·        Travel throughout the state of Iowa to meet with clients, assist with trainings and community outreach.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual in both spoken and written Spanish.
  • Understanding of issues of cultural and socioeconomic diversity as they apply to domestic violence prevention, intervention, and services.
  • Knowledge and understanding of civil and criminal law practice related to domestic violence, particularly protection orders, immigration, and divorce.
  • Public speaking and training experience.
  • Demonstrate ability to establish effective working relationships with government representatives and policy –makers.
  • Self-directed, flexible, assertive and diplomatic.
  • Experience in social justice, system advocacy, and social change work.
  • Able to provide own transportation and capacity to travel.

Service Opportunities

AmeriCorps VISTA Memberships

ICADV currently has two VISTA volunteer opening to assist staff in developing and enhancing program initiatives.  The positions are challenging.  Members will have the opportunity to use their talents while learning new skills.  

- The Community Organizing VISTA member will assist the MUNA Community Program Coordinator with the following;

  1. Develop English version of Community Education Manual

  2. Develop and update training materials

  3. Create systems to organize mailing and training materials and files

  4. Collect immigrant and domestic violence statistics state wide

  5. Develop sample letters in Spanish. 

Recommended skills and qualifications include:

  1. Proficiency in Spanish, written and spoken

  2. Desire to work with immigrant populations

  3. Willing to attend trainings throughout the term of service for personal development

  4. Participate in planning and facilitating program activities

  5. Self-motivated, able to take initiative

Recommended skills and qualification includes:
