December 31: We can change the social and political systems that perpetuate violence against women one person at a time. Consider what you can do to end violence against women in the coming year. Make a resolution to donate to ICADV or your local shelter, to volunteer or take action in other ways and to educate yourself and others on this issue.

December 30: Of all homicides committed against females, 30% are committed by their intimate partners.

December 29: The differences between women’s and men’s rates of physical assault by an intimate partner became greater as the as the seriousness of the assault increases. For example, women were two or three times more likely than men to report that an intimate partner threw something that could hurt them, or pushed, grabbed or sh...oved them. However they were 7 to 14 times more likely to report that an intimate partner beat them up, choked or tried to drown them, or threatened them with a gun or knife.

December 28: Approximately 15 percent of the men who had lived with a man as a couple reported being raped, physically assaulted, and/or stalked by a male cohabitant, while 7.7 percent of men who had married or lived with a woman as a couple reported such violence by a wife or female cohabitant.

December 27: Slightly more than 11 percent of women who had lived with a woman as part of a couple reported being raped, physically assaulted, and/or stalked by a female cohabitant, but 30.4 percent of the women who had married or lived with a man as part of a couple reported such violence by a husband or male cohabitant.

December 26:  On September 17, 2008, 100% of Iowa domestic violence programs participated in a census of domestic violence services. On that day, 122 requests for service went unmet. Programs cited lack of funding and staff as reasons they could not provide those services.

December 18: Incidents of violence against women and teenage girls are increasing on television at rates that far exceed the overall increases in violence on television. Violence, irrespective of gender, on television increased only 2% from 2004 to 2009, while incidents of violence against women increased 120% during that same period.

December 8:  For women and girls 16–44 years old, violence is a major cause of death and disability. In 1994, a World Bank study on ten selected risk factors facing girls and women in this age group, found rape and domestic violence more dangerous than cancer, motor vehicle accidents, war and malaria.
