Annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Tribute

La Placita on East Grand Avenue, Des Moines

You are invited to our Annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Tribute at La Placita on East Grand Avenue in Des Moines on Saturday, October 23, 2021, from 1 to 4 p.m. We will have a guest speaker, short remarks and an adult and kids Catrín and Catrina contests. 

We invite the community to join us in remembering the names, faces, and stories of victims who have lost their lives as a result of gender-based violence. You are welcome to bring a photograph of a loved one they would like to honor as we seek to elevate the stories and names of those that have departed us too soon.

This year's event includes: 

  • Live Music

  • Hot Chocolate and Pan Dulce

  • Face Painting

  • Adult Catrín and Catrina Contest 

  • Children’s Catrín and Catrina Contest

Entry and all events are free to the community. Masks are required.

Catrín and Catrina Contests
(Concurso de Catrín y Catrinas)

How to Participate
There are two ways to participate in our Catrín and Catrina Contests (Concurso de Catrín y Catrinas) this year.

  1.  In-person contest at our Annual Dia de los Muertos Tribute on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 1-4 p.m. at La Placita on East Grand Avenue, Des Moines. 
     

  2. Online by submitting a photo that will be showcased on our website, www.icadv.org
    Once you have registered for the online contest, please submit your photo to veronicag@icadv.org. 

Contests for BOTH in-person and online will have two categories:

  1. Children – ages 0-17

  2.  Adults – ages 18 and older

 

All participants ages 17 and younger must have parental/guardian consent to enter. Click here to download the consent form. There is no cost to participate in the online or in-person contests. 

Prizes
The top 3 entries in each category will receive a cash prize: 1st place - $150; 2nd place- $50;
3rd place - $25 (in the form of a check or gift card). All participants will have their Catrín and Catrina (Catrín y Catrinas) highlighted on ICADV's digital and print platforms, awareness campaigns and a variety of promotional materials.
